Why Being Yourself Matters More Than Following Trends | M. Cave Photography
If I’m being honest, I could probably come up with a thousand ways to make an extra buck.
Seriously. I see an idea online and immediately think, “Oh… I could do that.” A new editing trend, a marketing idea, a session style, a product, a preset pack, a workshop, a course. My brain moves fast and my list gets long. I’ve spent plenty of time thinking I would be good at something simply because I saw someone else doing it well.
But over time, I’ve realized something important. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should.
As photographers, creatives, and small business owners, we live in a world where inspiration is everywhere. Social media shows us what’s trending before we even finish our morning coffee. It’s easy to start measuring your work against someone else’s highlight reel.
I’ve felt that pressure. I’ve chased ideas that weren’t really mine. I’ve questioned my style, my workflow, even my voice, simply because I saw something polished and popular online.
And honestly, that’s exhausting.
Somewhere along the way, I realized that the work I’m most proud of never came from copying anyone else. It came from slowing down and asking myself one simple question:
Is this truly me?
Being original doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel. It means showing up with honesty. It means creating work that reflects your heart, your perspective, and your story.
For me, that looks like:
• Photographing seniors in a way that feels natural and true to who they are
• Capturing families and athletes with emotion, not just poses
• Focusing on connection more than perfection
• Letting moments unfold instead of forcing them
That’s the work that feels right to me.
One thing I’ve come to believe deeply is this: God made you exactly the way you are for a reason.
Your creativity, your personality, your experiences, even the things you once felt unsure about all shape how you see the world. And that perspective is something no one else can replicate.
When I stopped trying to sound like someone else, edit like someone else, or run my business like someone else, everything felt lighter. The work felt more meaningful. The connections felt deeper. And my confidence grew in a way trends never gave me.
I still get ideas constantly. That part hasn’t changed. I still joke that I could build ten side hustles by next week if I tried hard enough.
But I’ve learned to pause before jumping in.
Not every idea needs to become a project. Not every opportunity needs to be pursued. And not every trend deserves your energy.
What matters more than any of that is staying grounded in who you are.
This is one of the biggest reasons I love photographing seniors so much.
Senior year comes with a lot of pressure. Pressure to fit in. Pressure to have a plan. Pressure to look a certain way or act a certain way. I see it every year.
But what I want every senior who steps in front of my camera to know is this: you don’t have to be anyone else.
Your senior session isn’t about trends. It’s not about copying what your friends did. It’s about celebrating who you are right now in this season.
God made you you. And that alone is worth capturing.
If you’re in a season where you feel behind, I understand. You might feel unsure. Or you might be tempted to copy what’s working for someone else.
But your story matters. Your voice matters. Your perspective matters.
God didn’t create you to blend in. He created you to be fully, unapologetically yourself.
And that’s enough.
